The SAT is one of the most common tests that high school students take prior to applying to college. If you are in the middle of the SAT test prep process, you likely want to know what to expect on test day so that you have a better chance of getting a high score.
During the SAT test prep process, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the overall format of the test. Here is a brief overview of the test’s basic format:
- Reading — You will need to answer several multiple-choice questions based on different reading passages. The questions included will assess your ability to understand, analyze, and interpret the written material.
- Writing and Language — This section is also in multiple-choice format. The difference is that this section focuses on your ability to analyze and edit written passages for errors and improvements.
- Math — The math part of the SAT is divided into two subsections. During the first, you can use your calculator and during the second, you cannot use your calculator. Math topics covered usually include statistics, geometry, and algebra.
- Essay (Optional) — If you decide to take the optional essay, you will receive a prompt and then develop an essay that analyzes the author’s argument. This section assesses your ability to understand and analyze the rhetorical elements of a given text.
The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600, and your total score combines your scores from each section. If you take the essay portion, this is scored separately.
