Lots of high school seniors are figuring out how to pay for college. Some think it’s too late to apply for scholarships, but they’re wrong! Many scholarships have spring deadlines, which means that if students act now, they can still find ways to pay for college without going into debt! Scholarships are available to pay for community college and university tuition. Here are some tips to remember:
- Do your research and organize the info you find. Create a spreadsheet listing the scholarships’ names, deadlines, and application requirements. Work on applications in the order that they are due, but don’t wait until the deadline to submit your application.
- Proofread applications and essays carefully. Don’t omit requested information. Be sure that your essays specifically answer the questions and/or address the prompts. People make mistakes, but typos and errors don’t help at all.
- Contact recommenders ASAP. If you need recommendation letters, kindly ask for these as soon as possible. Always write thank-you notes to those who help you in this way.
Set aside time each week to work on scholarship applications, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from your guidance counselor or teachers. Attend an APlus scholarship session. Remember, every scholarship you win brings you one step closer to making college more affordable.
